A recent audit of what has been found in the countrys waste dumps has revealed that Britons throw away a lot of jewellery, one travel agent disposed of £200,000 in takings and blueprints to a new Royal Navy aircraft.
The findings add weight to the quote by actor Richard Burton "If you're going to make rubbish, be the best rubbish in it."
Other bizarre things found at the waste centres around the country was a mattress stuffed with £5,000 in bank notes, a tortoise that was in hibernation, and all the content of a mans wardrobe . The latter was thrown out by a scorned wife who found out about her husbands infidelity.
James Bennett, managing director of Hippowaste refuse disposal said, "People will literally throw anything away, whether intentionally or by mistake."
The survey was organised by Hippowaste after years of reports of strange finds from its staff .
The company has also found a collection of Beano comics spanning 25 years, artificial limbs and a suitcase containing skulls and other human bones. Fortunately the bones were traced to a hospital biology laboratory . Other depots found a police evidence bag used in a court case and a hoax bomb.
Regular items that found include passports, artificial legs and anti-aircraft shell cases that have been dug up in gardens or they are relics of the past that people no longer want.
It is estimated that the UK throws away 434 million tonnes of rubbish each year.
The company spend some time returning particular goods that have been discarded by mistake like the £200,000 which was found in several black plastic bags and the hibernating tortoise.
Recently a family walking in Cheltenham came across a stash of necklaces, rings and bangles when something twinkling caught their eye in the river Chelt. When the area was investigated closely many more items were found including a camera, and some old money . The police are now going through old burglary reports where items were reported as missing.
