A huge collection of stolen goods found

Tue, 05 Sep 2006

Police swooped on two houses in Swindon where they came across £26,000 worth of stolen jewellery .

It is thought that the items were stolen from houses across Swindon and were found hidden behind a freezer and buried in a garden .

The police now have the difficult task of reuniting the goods with their rightful owners.

Police have arrested two people in connection with find. One man has already been charged with three counts of burglary and is looking for six counts to be taken into consideration.

Should more victims of the burglary come forward, the men could face more charges.

Other items found in the haul were digital cameras, a mobile phone and a PlayStation.

Detective Sergeant Steve Rivers, investigating officer said one ring worth £6,000 was found and has been given back to its owner. Many other items have not yet been identified, this includes Rolex and Cartier watches .

DS Rivers said, "We think it’s all proceeds of dwelling burglaries.

"We have identified some of it but we need to identify the rest. It relates to a lot of offences in Swindon and the surrounding area."

Police are eager to find the owners of the goods. DS Rivers added, "If you have had jewellery stolen, either in a burglary or a theft or anything else and you have got property outstanding please contact us."

The houses were searched after one of the suspects was arrested on 14 August 2006.

DS Rivers said, "We would also like to find out about more victims so we can solve more burglaries."

He added, "It’s quite a good seizure of what’s believed to be stolen jewellery. We obviously feel there are more burglaries to be detected and more injured persons to find and that’s why we need the public’s help."

If anyone has been a victim of theft and has not had their property returned or if they think they can help the police with their inquiries, they should contact Swindon police on 0845 408 7000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 (this can be done anonymously.)
