Isle of Man Customs issues warning on buying designer jewellery overseas

Fri, 18 Jun 2010

Customs officers from the Isle of Man are warning families heading abroad to be wary of buying "bargain" designer jewellery or clothing while on holidays overseas because they are probably fake and Customs may be forced to forfeit them.

Warehouse Officer Ken Diack urged people to use their common sense. He said: "If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is."

Shoppers are also advised to be aware that legitimate purchases from international suppliers can often be subject to import duties and VAT once the items arrive in the Isle of Man. Mr Diack added: "For example, import taxes of up to 45 per cent may be applied to clothing from America, so the original purchase may not turn out to the bargain it first appeared to be."

Some of the items destined for Isle of Man addresses that have been seized by Customs officers are controlled drugs, firearms, weapons, counterfeit clothing, cigarettes and trinkets made from endangered species.
