Jaipur jewellery exhibited in London

Exquisite treasures from Gem Palace in Jaipur are going on display at Somerset House, London from 28 September to 22 October as part of the Gilbert Collection.

In total 250 items will be shown are all are described as rare examples of traditional Indian jewellery . The majority of which are one-off commissions.

Some of the jewellery on display will be gold and enamelled chandelier earrings, cabochon rings, delicate bracelets, emeralds, sapphires, and rubies, beaded necklaces studded with diamonds and other pieces set with precious and semi precious stones.

To tie in with the exhibition, a specially designed shop will be selling a selection of jewellery with prices starting from £500, according to official sources.

The Gem Palace was established in 1852 by jewellers to the Mughul emperors of the time. Today the Gem Palace is run by the Kasliwal family who are descendents of those who established the Gem Palace.

They are still producing breathtaking jewellery today. Recently their pieces were seen at the Academy Awards in Los Angeles worn by Amber Valletta and Mira Sorvino.

Other admirers are Nicole Kidman, Mick Jagger, Giorgio Armani and Arun Nayar. Past admirers have included Countess Mountbatten of Burma and Diana, princess of Wales .

This exhibition has been organised by Harry Fane, an authority on vintage Cartier. Because of the strong connections between Cartier and India, Fane is a frequent visitor to India.

It was during these visits that Fane became close to the Kasliswal family and it became his ambition to bring the Gem Palace to London.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a specially designed catalogue with an introduction by the queen of Jaipur, Maharani Gayatri Devi.
