Jewellery designs enter the computer age

Wed, 10 Jan 2007

Jewellers are even more eager to please their customers by allowing them to completely dictate the specifications of a piece of jewellery . Whereas before you only had to choice of what was on display.

Jewellery design is moving away from traditional images of semi-literate goldsmiths working in family vaults. The future embraces the use of new software and computer aided design (CAD) to create exquisite pieces.

By investing in new equipment such as gemological microscopes, matrix and polariscopes, jewellers can now experiment with designs using intricate motifs giving women a much wider choice.

Design and manufacturing using CAD and 3D modelling systems such as matrix and rhinoceros are commonly used. Technology is also being used for production control and inventory management.

Avneet Verma, head of gemology, National Institute of jewellery Designing and Technology said, "Automatic setup, advanced software and technical expertise increases the efficiency of workers by almost five times and reduces discrepancies by about 50-70%. Because of this the finished product is of better quality and can compete with international designs."

Once the specifications of the piece are fed in to the computer the final product is then produced. Then a surface model in created. The latest is blend target modelling where the surface modellers create a working skin over the component being developed. The advantage of this system is that smooth, organic models can be fully controlled by the user instead of having to re-build the model from scratch.

An interactive Eternity Ring Builder means that it is easy and much quicker to design a ring using any number and type of gem. The program goes as far as to set the shape, size, number and order of stones as well as their spacing within the band. This also applies to most other jewellery designs.
