Platinum demand for jewellery in China to fall

Tue, 09 Dec 2008

In China, the demand for platinum that is used in making jewellery is expected to fall by 22 per cent this year. This will bring down world-wide use by a similar amount, reflecting soft retail sales and increased recycling, according to a recent report.

China accounts for over half of the global demand for platinum used to make jewellery . The rise in the price of platinum in the first half of the year impaired jewellery manufacturing, states a report by Johnson Matthey, a specialist platinum refiner and fabricator. With the increase in price of the metal, recycling of old jewellery has increased substantially in China and Japan, further depressing net demand.

Johnson Matthey said: "The high platinum price has encouraged increased use of the cheaper white gold for gem-set jewellery and there is some evidence of a trend to reduce the average weight of a piece of platinum jewellery ."
