Childrens jewellery is usually either cheap and throwaway or in contrast, expensive, silver christening jewellery .
However, The Childrens Jewellery Company has a range of handcrafted jewellery for children where the designs use small beads and clasps to suit little necks and wrists. Designer Harriet McAlonan explained: "This jewellery is made exclusively for children. The size and proportions have to be right, or it would just look like children playing 'dressing up'. We want children to enjoy wearing our jewellery and make it part of the way they dress. They will only do this if they like it, and if it looks good."
Recently, several celebrity children have been photographed wearing jewellery, including Madonna's daughter Lourdes and Brad and Angelina's daughter Zahara. Ms McAlonan says that with such high-profile children now on the front cover of magazines, it is bound to influence the way other children dress too.
