The latest weapon in the fight against jewellery crime has now gone live.
A joint initiative from the National Association of Goldsmiths and insurers T H March, called SaferGems, will co-ordinate information on incidents and suspicious events, while sending alerts to jewellers . The initiative hopes to have a significant impact on losses within the jewellery industry.
Michael Hoare, CEO of the National Association of Goldsmiths, said: "People are always saying ‘somebody should do something about crime’. It will not prevent theft altogether, but it will assist jewellers to recognise and avoid hazardous situations, and assist the police to break up gangs of jewellery thieves at an earlier stage than at present."
In recent years, because of improved security at banks and building societies, jewellers have increasingly become the target for crime. According to a recent survey of NAG members, 86 per cent of jewellers believe that there is a ‘greater climate of fear’ than ever before, while 53.5 per cent of respondents said that they had been a victim of robbery within the past five years.
