Hard-pressed families are being tempted to sell their old gold jewellery to cover essential bills are at risk of being ripped off, it is claimed.

Tens of thousands of people have been enticed by high-profile advertising campaigns which offer money to those who want to sell old gold and silver jewellery . The company CashMyGold, which is spending large sums on commercials for daytime television, is using the slogan 'Best prices paid for your gold' to attract customers.

However a shopping exercise found that the company only offered a fraction of the true value of the gold and silver it was sent by a client. An Edinburgh jewellery firm, Macintyres, sent batches of gold and silver for which it paid £226.07 to CashMyGold to see how much it would pay. They received a cheque from CashMyGold for just £90.37, which was a reduction of £135.70 on the true value.

After getting a complaint from Gaynor Macintyre, the Scottish firm's co-director, CashMyGold sent a second cheque for £88.63.
