Cash-strapped couples hoping to tie the knot can now buy an engagement ring for under £400 from Asda .
Traditionally, the engagement ring is chosen by the groom-to-be and the self-serving claim of the jewellery industry is that he is expected to spend at least one month's salary before he pops the question. However, Asda are selling engagement rings for just £397.
The wedding website Confetti.co.uk. claims that the average spent on an engagement ring in the UK is £1,800. However, supermarket chain Asda have stated that sales of their engagement rings in December last year have quadrupled compared to the month before. The best selling ring on offer at the supermarket is an 18ct gold, 1 Carat, 7 Stone diamond ring, which is currently on offer for £397 down from £497.
Asda spokesman, Jennifer England commented: "After a tough 2009 for some couples, savvy love birds are realising they can get a great diamond ring that won't break the bank but will still be a girl's best friend for many years to come."
