Jewellery in a safe deposit box goes missing from NatWest

Fri, 08 Jan 2010

Police are investigating the disappearance of £60,000 of Indian jewellery from safe deposit boxes owned by a popular British Asian musician.

Johnny Kalsi, of the drum band the Dhol Foundation, believes the gold was taken from a branch of NatWest in Feltham, west London, some time in 2009. He first became aware that the two boxes were missing on 23 November when he went to put some more items in them.

NatWest has since acknowledged that it cannot find the valuables. Mr Kalsi said what had happened cast doubt on the bank's security and urges everyone with safe deposit boxes held in High Street banks to check the contents.

Brian Capon from the British Bankers' Association said: "It's extremely rare for anything to go missing and, in 40 years of banking, I've heard of only a handful of cases and these usually turn out to be a case of misplacement rather than loss." NatWest is investigating the case and has said it will co-operate with the police investigation.
