Fri, 29 Jan 2010

China's product safety agency is investigating reports of dangerously high levels of cadmium that were found in childrens jewellery exported to the United States and possibly Canada .

The Associated Press (AP) conducted an investigation by running a laboratory test on 103 pieces of low-priced children’s jewellery which had been purchased in several different states. The results found 12 items with extremely high levels of cadmium, which can hinder brain development in young children, according to recent research and is known to cause cancer .

Some items contained a cadmium level of 80 percent and one showed a level of 91 percent. In the United States cadmium is regulated in painted toys but not in jewellery.

In response to the news, Wal-Mart has pulled the products mentioned in the report from its shelves. Wal-Mart and Claire’s are retailers that had items with the highest cadmium content. Both stores have outlets in Canada.
