What is a Precious Metal?

A precious metal is the name given to gold, silver and platinum.
They are given this name due to their unique qualities of being the least reactive metals known to exist and their limited availability.
This makes them desirable and prized; their use is dated back to ancient times when they have been found amongst possessions and artefacts of the earliest known humans indicating that they may have been the earliest indication of wealth and superiority.
