Diamond Engagement Rings
The origins of engagement rings can be traced back to ancient Egypt, but it wasn't a diamond ring being placed on a finger, it was a reed ring, which symbolised marriage. The first diamond engagement ring was created and presented to Mary of Burgundy in 1477 by Archduke Maximilian of Austria. This event started the tradition of giving a diamond engagement ring to a betrothed, however, this was only for the rich and mighty at the time.
In the 1870s, diamonds were discovered in huge quantities. This made the precious stones more accessible to the public.
Nowadays, diamond engagement rings are popular across the globe. The symbolism has changed too, from a sign of ownership, they now represent mutual commitment and everlasting love. In addition to they symbolism, their styles have changed, resulting in different shapes, cuts and colours. There are no limits!
